  2. sponsors pay them to advertise on their websites. the more people that use their sites the more money the sponsors will pay because more people are seeing their advertisements

  5. paid webhosting, paid email is an option, PLENTY of advertising. note the ad for the movie 23 on the top of the answers board. there is advertising all over yahoo. then there is yahoo search advertising, yahoo business support, yahoo internet dsl, let's see...i don't think yahoo is hard up for cash.
  6. it is a combination of advertising-selling ad space to specific groups in certain areas of the site AND sponsors-groups/individuals/businesses who underwrite the cost of a specific project or task associated with thier industry to gain exposure for a product often new to the market hope this helps
