why does my signature line now have HTML code instead of fonts?

when I compose an email, my signiture line displays the HTML code such as <span style="FONT-SIZE:10pt;COLOR:navy;"></span> I am in "rich text view". it just started doing this and I have no idea what setting seems to have changed.
