Can someone give me basic alternatives to editing my freewebs site and not using their templates?

What programs should I use? Dreamweaver, GoLive? What do I really need to know? CSS, HTML? I just want a rundown of how to do this. And please don't tell me to pay for a website, this is my portfolio and I eventually will but I at least first want to know how to get the most out of this free website because I believe it will suffice for what I need it to do.
