Need help with html code for background color in header. I do not know anything about html coding.?

I am currently designing my own website, and need a little help in html coding for a black solid color in my header. I have tried researching it and putting different coding together.   1. That's definately not the html I learned! It must be more advanced because I just took a one semister class. Sorry, I thought I would be able to help, but I can't really. Maybe try putting bgcolor=#000000 into the <TBODY> but other than that I have Nooo idea. I'm not too familiar w/ tables. You could try using that program called, Fireworks, I think. It's really easy to use and you can make pretty good websites.
